The Apollo was amazing. Just surreal. Really. I shall elaborate in the next post when pictures are readily available.

As for now, please tune in (here) tonight to East Village Radio for The Main Ingredient from midnight-2am EST (9pm-12am PST) with Jon Oliver, a good friend of my dear RRS Feed partner Shred One. I'll be dropping a nice little set for you folks who missed the Iman @ the Apollo show. This way, you can all be a part of my NY experience.

Also this weekend Kidragon introduced me to a very significant man in the Hiphop, DJing, and the digging game: Danny Dan the Beat Man, the man behind the infamous Dusty Fingers series. That vinyl series introduced the realm of digging rare grooves & breaks to so many DJs including myself. I recall inheriting my first issue Vol. 1 from my brother's collection in high school with Dorothy Ashby's "The Windmills of Your Mind." I was pulled in like a fish on a hook. This man is a walking music encyclopedia and beyond. That's all I can really say for now. Just, wow.

So I'm getting ready for NY this weekend and decided to hit up a couple of my favorite thrift stores near me to find any puffy jackets with a faux-fur hood. You know, what you're supposed to wear in NY. Maybe a beanie with a bill, tan Timberlands, gold bamboo earrings with my street name in the middle, and a pair of tight Baby Phat jeans? Let's just start with puffy jacket first. Anyway, I didn't find one. BUT I did find this awesome travel jewelry case. Maybe I can get those personalized bamboo earrings after all...

So the RRS is driving back up to LA after a dope night in SD at Bar Dynamite with DJs Beatnick, Bency, and Sovereign-T. Just reflecting on this whole experience, I'm so thankful to have been put in this position with these beautiful people surrounding me. It's been nothing but good vibes, good music, good practice, good people, good building, and did I mention good vibes? As RRS develops its rhythm and craft, it's been more of a blessing just bringing people closer together. Especially in this spirited time of the year. So for that I'm thankful. Yay.

So I've been in Sacramento for the past 5 days at my homegirl's place just maxin' out. On Wednesday we went through her crusty ass vinyl collection in her garage that's been neglected since the stone age. Straight fire. This chick was diggin' during the 90's, so by default dope wax just naturally migrates into her crates. I can't really list what we uncovered because of certain trade secret confidentiality harassment agreement (mm-hm), but I'm sure you will all be please to find out once we get our nuggets together and refined. Let me just say SP404 + vinyl ripping sweat shop + paper cut chirp flares. Somethin' like that, yea. Stay tuned my brethren.

So my original plan today was to hit up the LA swapmeet with MarvaLiz at the Rose Bowl, but seeing how I stayed up until 4am working on one single scratch, that didn't pan out as expected. Instead we hit up the Council of Jewish Women Thrift Store on Santa Monica Blvd and Veteran. They've always got great stuff. I found a bag that looks almost exactly like the one I bought from there (vintage black leather Coach briefcase bag with gold clasp), so Liz made the wise purchase. Alls ya really need is some good leather cleaner/conditioner and a leather shoe stain to get the purse back in tiptop shape. Here's a pic of something she didn't purchase bc we didn't know what the stiff stain on the back of it was.

Fur! Faux-fur that is.

Btw, I was fortunate enough to attend Hypnotic Brass Ensemble's performance this past Friday and it was uh-mazing. I think in total they're an 8-piece orchestra made up of brass instruments and a funky drummer. Not to mention all brothers except one member. And they're gangsta. Check em out.

I'll leave you with this utterly awesome book-paper peacock displayed at Anthropology, SM 3rd St. It was almost as majestic as the actual bird. Who am I kidding...of course it was.

Floppy ears don't play with long necks.

I think Xochi might have a possible ear infection in her left ear, so I'm gonna work my mommy magic with home remmedies then take her to the vet when all else fails. She's a victim of the floppy ear trap. Good sport nonetheless. Right now she's actually barking in her sleep and it's utterly adorable. Gettem' girl.

This Friday! Here's the real flyer for JazzyFatNasty. Apparently it's an Osiris sponsored costume event. News to me. No DJ names on the flyer though. Grrrrrrrr.

Last night the girls and I attempted to make homemade sushi. On the menu was fatty tuna, albacore, and shrimp tempura (which didn't make it in rolls much before ending up in our tummies). Yum! I like cream cheese in with my raw fish. So does Niko. Post-sushi was banana cream pie from Whole Foods, courtesy of MarvaLiz. Uh-mazing.

Some people should never be given power. Stalin. Hilter. [My recent boss inserted here]. At the least I've learned characteristics to definitely avoid obtaining for my own well-being. I'm just sayin'.

Deep breath. Movin' forward.

Many things since we last spoke. Just to update you most importantly: Xochi is doing spectacular. She's what I look forward to when I wake up or when I get home. So far, she has learned to:
1) sit when presented a yummy t-bone-resembling treat;
2) fetch any of her various squeaky stuffed toys or balls; and
3) jump onto couches or beds, usually by the 3rd try.

That last one is of Xoch-girl and her sister, Mitchy (yes, same litter). They both look male, but the thing is... they're not.

I'll make this fairly brief since there's exactly 40 minutes left of battery in my laptop, already hazardously in the red.

I must admit, there have been quite a few pregnancies surrounding me lately. I just found out in the past month that like 5 people I know are preggers, not to mention my roommate thought she was (only to find out it was a false alarm, seeing that it was physically impossible). I just went to a baby shower last weekend for Ron's brother, while his other brother is having one next month as well. And don't you all think that I'm an exception to all of this fertility...

Come this Labor Day Monday, I will be expecting...

Her name is Xochi (pronounced "Soh-chi," rhymes with Mochi), short for Xochitl. A quaint little Native Aztec name meaning "flower." I wanted to give her a Spanish name, so I asked the Mexican nurse at my work and that's what she came up with. She was born of a Terrier-mix mom and Shitzu father who reside in Carson, CA. She's one of 5 in the litter and all of her siblings look completely different from one another. She has also has a beard. I think it's the Terrier in her.

Speaking of birth-giving, HAPPY BIRTHDAY NIKO! Who is currently wandering the streets of Seattle after her strenuous work day taking pictures for Facebook at a gaming convention. Bah.

And while we're at it, speaking of Niko, here's a wonderful video she just emailed me that I think is just ABSOLUTELY ridiculous.

Hey stranger! I have no excuses other than.... my Enter button wasn't working for a while. There.

So since we last spoke, I was blessed with the opportunity to play another set on the Wake Up Show. This time it was a tribute to the (three) and only De La Soul. You can check out a free download of it posted on the Acrylick Clothing blog.

Big ups to Niko Niko Sushi for the flyer! I ended up buying a new desktop for this one. I figured these are worth more than using my refrigerator of a laptop from 2002, where it looks like a poorly made flip book when you scroll. But still, a new PC still reaffirms why I loath PCs and will remain MAC fo lyfe! (throws up MAC gang sign).

As for He Said, She Said: we're in the middle of finding a new venue for the event. Blue Velvet was a beautiful spot, just not meant for us. Not to mention the poor treatment of DJs, locking them in a blue-lit sweaty fish tank isolated from society. Updates on that to come.

Good Lord. I don't even think I felt like this when James Brown or Dilla passed. Probably because it's the difference from a friend you made in high school/college passing vs. a childhood friend you grew up with. Not to mention myself growing up as well as watching HIM grow throughout the years from his brotherhood band Jackson 5. I attended the Root Down at El Cid last night and enjoyed a tribute set played by DJ Slopoke and other DJs, once again being reminded of how his music transcends age, time, genre preference, musical depth, ethnicity, culture, dance ability, gender, you name it. As my dear friend Valtron stated, "this one hits home." May God have mercy on his soul. I know we're all going to hear countless MJ tribute set for the next couple of weeks/months, but I think we all have realized that his music NEVER gets played out.

The Do-Over: "Whaddya know..."

So the Do-Over is this wonderful little summer party in LA every Sunday (+ certain holiday celebrations). Yesterday was the kick-off jam. The creators of the Do-Over thought it be genius to not announce their special guest DJs before the event. This proved them so. Hence, "Well, well, well, whaddya know..."

Numark murdered it with his eyes closed. And the most beautiful thing about it was that he played during sunset, lighting was PERFECT. Lighting is so crucial, so crucial. My accomplices for the afternoon/evening were these 2 lovely ladies, Eishil [Beat Swapmeet/Fly Ball] and DJ Roza [LA/SF].

Around 10:30pm Roza and I headed back to the cars, which felt like 456789 miles away considering we lost track of how long we were standing for and our legs were like jello. Bumped a "Numark Live @ The Get Back" mixtape until 11pm rolled around and we tuned in here,

where the World Famous Wake Up Show lives and listened as King Tech ever so graciously played my dinky 10 minute set to open up the show. Sigh. Hearing yourself on the radio is like no other feeling I can describe. Ok, maybe I'll try: it's kinda like...finding free puppies. Animal presence/presents

So since Maximus passed I've been in dire need of a furry little animal companion. I had him and his late wife, Poochie, since I was in 4th grade and being without pets for the first 4 months in 14 years has proved itself amongst the most difficult. Animal presence just makes the circle complete in general happiness even if there are other existing gaps. They override them all. It's like they have the manager card that overrides all delinquent transactions.

In my current living situation, my landlord doesn't allow pets (according to the foreign boyfriend of my neighbor across the way), however, neither of my roommates have ever spoken to or seen this so-called "landlord" as long as they've lived here. So this leads me to assume that the chances of he/she/it randomly stopping by to check up on the place is highly unlikely. Thus, I'm considering getting a pet. Preferably a dog of course, but to better my chances of preventing random check-ups, a cat might be the quieter option. A big downside to that is that you can't take cats on walks. I mean if I got a cat, I'd want one that pretty much acts like a dog. Compromise, man. Compromise.

Maybe I can find a cat that looks like this little fellow right here.

So just a little insight to my daylight life, I work at a doctor's office so by default I have to confine to the uniformity of medical attire aka scrubs, or as my coworker Adri and I call them: boxes. While biking to work this morning, my ceil blue scrub pant leg got caught in the gears (since they're so darn baggy) and ripped a hole, so I had to go looking online for some new ones. I mean, they have to really try hard to make them look this bad. You can make normal, decent looking clothes without much effort. But these......good Lord, these....
You just naturally fold into the shape of a cardboard box upon slipping them on. And they come in various horribly solid colors, OR! you can make like a nursery wall and get them in "prints."

REALLY. I mean really. And as if things couldn't be anymore unflattering, someone decided it was a great idea to make clogs the official footwear to just finish the piece off.

Ok, ok, ok. That was my vent for the night. On a lighter note, I've graciously been added to the JazzyFatNasty DJ roster and scheduled to spin there the first Friday of every month. And seeing that tomorrow just happens to be included in that series of first Fridays you can catch me there this weekend with Kidragon, who will be blessing the decks with a special tribute set to David Axelrod, whose Timelss perfomance (with opening set by J.Rocc) was unfortunately canceled this weekend (DEVASTATION!). I was suuuuuuper bumbed, especially since I missed the previous Timeless performance by Arthur Verocai, one of the greatest Brazilian musicians ever, when he performed 2 weeks ago thinking Axelrod was the prize. Ah well. Looks like I'm just gonna have to go to Brazil myself. Here's a little clip of what I wish was...

Alright, let's just start this post off right.

This is Murphy Valdez, currently residing in San Diego, CA at KD's house. Just tryin' to give him some support seeing that he just underwent major neuterization and has to wear one of those silly head cones. I used to make Max wear a head cone only because he had a chronic addiction to chewing on himself like beef jerkey. It became quite comical though when he'd get stuck in doorways because the front of the cone got caught on the side of the door. He eventually found his way around the cone to once again get his beef jerkey on. Oh Maximus (may you rest in paz <3).

Last weekend my girl Nassirah aka Mixxleema aka my Medinah rider from the Bay came down last weekend with her friend Val. We mutually concluded that planetary alignment occurred that weekend considering the ever so convenient placement of various people and events throughout.

Among them:
1. Consistent parking right out front of my house upon turning the corner on a usually stubborn street.
2. Musical surprise guests show up on stage who are better than the artist we originally came to see.
3. Every store we walked into was playing doper than normal music, ie: Starbucks, Noah's Bagels, Bath & Body Works.
4. Found nose rings for sale for only $1-$5 at a random asian trinket store that smelled of Tiger Balm.
5. Bypassed all wackness for a concentration of funky beats too deep.
6. Nostalgically reflected on the voyage of a lifetime.

So 'twas a lovely weekend in San Diego. I guest DJ'ed at JazzyFatNasty along with DJ Virus & DJ Kidragon for Ms. Annie Lou's bday, who btw looked very "Hey Birthday Girl!" cute. We all enjoyed the night very much besides this one chick requesting for Jay-Z. I should really look into that "No Requests" shirt.

Or possibly a magnetic forcefield to surround the DJ booth. Yes....(rubs hands together sinisterly). Nonetheless, thank you everyone who pulled through, namely Niko, Cheryl & Irvine Co., Kristine V., Zar (Pnoy Apparel), DJ Eclektic & the Watwood Exclusives, and of course Annie Lou, Kristina L., Annabel & others. Here are some proofs of the night.
Later that weekend, a rendezvous con Niko y Eljay along the Embarcadero de San Diego. We approached what seemed to be temporarily abandoned boats and played out natural scenarios for photos only to realize the film in my Fisheye II camera had only 24 exposures. How I managed to wind it to 31 before realizing it didn't go up to 36 exp? We'll just have to see after they're developed. Here are proofs from Loreto Jamlig's glass:

is what I'll title it. So thanks to my dear friend Niko, I have once again entrusted my future with her suggestions and started this thing right here. She advised that I post my DJ gigs and mixtape-whatnot's here and maybe that will help motivate me to actually start on some darn mixes in the first place.

BUT!... we musn't spend all our time with gagging-dope music when there are still puppies to think about as well. Thus, I present to the audience before me: Records & Puppies.
